Strand Planning

The Principal has set up a group to look at space planning for the Strand after Life Sciences leaves in 1999. 3000m2 of space will be released and there is a budget of £3.5 million for refurbishment. We need to develop an ISS position and Andrew Byerley has been asked to chair a small working party of Hushang Balyuzi, Jane Lucas, Vivien Robertson, Pete Sudell and Harold Short to recommend our stance. While they will develop a set of questions and issues, at least the following will be considered.

a) what is our total space need in the light of the strategic plan

b) should we extend the information centre concept to the Strand and if so should all workstation rooms be incorporated in that space

c) if so do we need one centre or two (in practical cost terms I suspect two based on the Old Library and the Strand Building is the only affordable model). If two, what is the required space balance between the two.

d) again if so do we need a separate Computing (operations) Centre. Should it be based at the Strand or south of the river

e) where should focused staff be housed

Nominally the Principal's group has to report by end of May. Ideally our group will report by end of April, but in reality both dates may have to slip by a month.

Slotting in

The College and the Unions have not yet reached agreement on the procedures for "slotting in" staff in the merged College. We await further advice on how quickly we can proceed to make appointments.

Staff structure seminars

Both Birmingham and Sheffield Hallam have agreed to hold a seminar/workshop at King's on their experience of convergence. Likely dates are either 18th or 20th May. Although not everyone will be able to attend it is hoped that we can get as wide a cross-section of staff as possible to attend.

Further details asap.

Corrections.

Administrative Computing is not to move to Capitol House at London Bridge. It appears that this was a proposal rather than a decision. The current proposal is that the Estates Department will move there.

There will be no more graphics of our bright new buildings as these overload the system
